Calling all Swannies!

With the Tet break now over (Chúc Mừng Năm Mới!/Happy New Year!), it’s time once again to dust the studs off and start looking forward to what is going to be a HUGE year of AFL Asia footy.

There were a few goodbyes after the 2022 season concluded and the club would like to once again thank the players and committee members that have recently departed for their time, efforts and the memories made during their tenure with our great footy club. As we know, with change comes opportunity and the upside is that we now look to bring in some new faces with fresh ideas and perspectives to fill several vacant club and committee roles (listed far below) for 2023 and beyond.

An action-packed year awaits, and what better time to announce the games that will shape the first half of the season than right now. The initial focus for 2023 has been on securing games early on, and against strong competition for both our Men’s and Women’s teams, to condition ourselves against the best and ultimately prepare to have another real crack at some silverware at the 2023 AFL Asian Championships in September!

There is of course plenty of fun to be had throughout the year, the SAFL and HAFL leagues will also be running throughout the course of 2023 (North and South calendars to come shortly so stay tuned), and a few more matches/tours for the 2nd half of the season should be locked in over the coming weeks.

Our current confirmed fixtures are below:

  • Saturday, March 18th – Vietnam Swans vs Hong Kong Dragons (Men’s only) – Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
  • Saturday, April 22nd – ANZAC Friendship weekend vs Singapore Wombats/Wombettes (Men’s and Women’s) – Vung Tau, Vietnam
  • Saturday, May 20th – Vietnam Swans vs Indonesia Volcanoes (Men’s and Women’s) – Hanoi, Vietnam.

Summer break – Late June-July

  • Saturday, September 2nd – 2023 AFL Asian Championships (Date to be confirmed but very likely 02/09) – Pattaya, Thailand.

Everyone is welcome to training and events – Whether it’s just for a casual kick and catch at training, perhaps to participate in the local mixed leagues, or maybe you’re a keen footballer and looking to quench that competitive thirst against other countries in the region – there’s a spot for everyone so get involved!

Current players, please put these dates in your calendars and start planning where required. The club has retained the huge majority of its cattle from season 2022 which is fantastic and we want to attack this season showing strength in numbers! We broke club records with our touring squads in 2022 and there is no way, especially with a few new recruits, that we can’t keep breaking them from year to year as our club and footy across the region continues to grow.

It’s an unbelievably exciting time for the footy club, please keep your eye on the Vietnam Swans website and social channels for updates, be sure to support our club sponsors, and remember that you get out what you put in!

Looking forward to a memorable season ahead! HONK!!!
