Footy is alive and well in PNG

Swannie and current Austrade Commissioner to PNG, Kev Dacey, has just emailed the Vietnam Swans with details of the AFL PNG Kokoda Challenge which will be held from 9-13 March, 2011, as part of Australia Week in PNG.

The PNG Mosquitoes will play a match against a Chairman’s Invitational Squad to be known as Australia on 12 March.

Tour Highlights

  • International Match: PNG v Australia
  • Kokoda visit, cultural and historical awareness
  • AFL PNG Academy project
  • Australia Week celebrations
  • Kokoda War Cemetery

Itinerary:

Day 1 – Wednesday, 9 March

  • Brisbane Airport to Port Moresby; accommodation – AFL PNG Academy; transfers to Academy; War Cemetery tour

Day 2 – Thursday, 10 March

  • Kokoda Track Visit; walk from academy to host village/ school; overnight in village.

Day 3 – Friday, 11 March

  • Walk out to Academy; night on the town

Day 4 – Saturday, 12 March

  • International Match – PNG & AUST; AFL PNG function. Following day, return to Australia.

Kev, who will be in Vung Tau for the Vietnam Swans ANZAC Friendship Weekend (23-25 April 2011) adds that “they are talking about Spider Everett and Shane Crawford (coming up) which would be good for the AFL Academy kids. The Academy is fully funded by the AFL and will produce some really good kids to go on to bigger and better things in Oz.”
