Revo lines up teh big sticks at the 2012 Asian Champs.

Dave O’Shea reviews teh Swannies second game of the 2012 Asian Champs when we played the home team, the Thailand Tigers. the Tigers beat the Swannies; 21pts to 9pts.

After a great first win to Singapore, the Swannies were unfortunately not able to perform at their best in the second match and therefore went down to Thailand in a tight battle. Although the Swannies didn’t play badly, they certainly were not able to play at the same level which saw them beat pre tournament favourites (Singapore) in their first match. Some of the huge crowd of spectators suggested that the Swans went into the match with the wrong attitude after a big first win. The Swannies realised after the match, that at the Asian Champs, you can’t take anyone lightly, especially at their home ground.

The first half was a close battle and the Swannies in fact had the early momentum. There was constant pressure from the midfield of the Swans and the ball spent a long period of time in the Thaigers back half. To the Thai team’s credit, they were able to repel the constant pressure from the Swans and were able to stay even throughout the first half. Both teams had their opportunities to kick goals and take a strangle hold in the match, however the wind was playing havoc and unfortunately for the Swans, we were travelling with the breeze in the first half. We knew we needed to go into half time with the lead otherwise it would be an uphill battle in the second half. An uphill battle is what it was going to have to be as the scores were level at half time.

The second half saw the Thai team really use the wind to their advantage. They were able to get on top in the midfield and were delivering the ball very well into their forward line. The Swannies fought hard all the way to the end of the match, but the home ground advantage and the wind was too much of a factor and the Thailand Tigers were too good on the day winning by a couple of goals.

The Swannies now had to win our remaining two games to have any chance of making the finals. The first game would be against the Philippine Eagles and the last would be against the undefeated Malaysian Warriors. How would the Swannies respond after a disappointing result against the Tigers????
