Ambassador opens Australian Rules Football tournament in Hanoi

Ambassador Hugh Borrowman will open an Australian Rules Football tournament in Hanoi on 10 November.

Australian Rules Football is a style of football that developed in Australia in the mid 19th century.  It is played with an oval-shaped ball, and has similar rules to the Irish sport of Gaelic football.  It is a fast and physical game.

The tournament, the Indochina Cup, will feature the Vietnam ‘Swans’, the Laos ‘Elephants’, the Cambodian ‘Eagles’ and the Thailand ‘Tigers’.  It is held every year in different cities around South East Asia.  Vietnam has won the last two tournaments.  Hanoi last hosted the tournament in 2007 – the tournament’s first year.

Ambassador Borrowman said: “I’m very pleased that Hanoi will host the Indochina Cup this year.  The fact that Australians come together every year to put on the tournament reflects the passion players and organisers feel for this unique Australian sport.  It’s a great showcase for Australian culture.  And I encourage Vietnamese people to come along and enjoy it!”

The tournament will be held from 10am to 3.30pm on the practice field behind My Dinh National Stadium, on Nguyen Co Thach Street.  Entry is free of charge.
