While soccer and basketball tend to grab sports headlines around Saigon, the busiest club in the country over the next month may well be the Vietnam Swans.
Celebrating 10 years in the country, the Swans are the premier Australian Rules Football club in Vietnam. The Swans have already played numerous games this year, but want to finish strong with a couple of fixtures in Saigon and a tournament abroad.
The action begins in earnest this weekend, with the Vietnam Swans taking on the Southern Dragons, a touring side from Melbourne, Australia, on Saturday at the Estella Complex in District 2 at 2 p.m. Two weeks later, they return to their familiar home ground at RMIT University in District 7 to play host another set of Dragons, these ones from Hong Kong. That game kicks off Oct. 26 at 2 p.m.
Both games will serve as tune-ups for the Swans as they head to Cambodia to defend their title as regional champions for the last two years at the Indochina Cup, Nov. 9, against teams from Laos, Thailand and hosts Cambodia.
“The Indochina Cup is one of the longest running tournaments in Asia and for the guys who have been here a while it means almost more than anything,” said Vietnam Swans captain Bill Crang. “We still remember getting smashed by Thailand when they were a much stronger team, and we have a very strong rivalry with Cambodia and would be devastated for them to take the title from us.”
With every game being an undertaking to participate in, be it at home or abroad, it’s key for the club to make each match count.
“The coming month really gives us a chance to make this one a successful season and take momentum into next year,” Crang said.
