Dave Kainey is the Flyer. Today, just a couple of days out from the 14th Annual Asian Championships, former Skipper, Luke “Dukesy” Creamer spends 5 Minutes with the Flyer.
Dukesy jumps the gun and comprehensively beats the Flyer to get the first word in…
Hey Flyer, great to hear from you. All is well here back in OZ. (New born) little Alby is a star and the (Richmond) Tigers are finals bound so things couldn’t be better. I am working as well so i have snuck this reply in while kids are doing an exam.
Q1. First things first Dukesy, it is an honour to catch up with one of the Vietnam Swans’ great footballers and leader. To kick off, the birth of Alby probably puts all things in life in perspective. You must be a very proud dad.
Very proud, Flyer, The little man is a star and (wife) Pia and I could not be prouder. However, we are not a big fan of when he is testing his pipes (screaming) out at 3 in the morning ! Who knows though maybe he will be a good tourer in the future if he can be that loud after 12 or he may be solid at giving umpires a few on-field tips!
Q2. This year you miss the Asian Championships in Thailand. Your name is on the banner ‘Ahh McRae, you’ve done it again’ for this year. How does it feel not being there, as an ex skipper?
I am very jealous that the boys are heading off to the Asian Champs. The last three years we have made huge steps as a club and have become a respected force in Asian footy. I know this reputation will be further extended this year in Thailand.
Q3. What advice / words can you pass to Billy and SOS, the co-captains?
Billy be careful in Pattaya and SOS keep sitting on heads. But seriously, both are great Swannies and will lead from the front in Thailand and make sure the Swannies do their very best on the day as they have done in the preparations and build up stages.
Q4. If my memory serves me correctly, the Swannies have had to play the Singapore Wombats first up in the past two years at the Asian Championships, with last year seeing the Swannies outgunning the Wombats. What was the key to the win?
Probably the two goals I kicked were the key! No, the key was that we were flat out at the contest from the get go. We backed ourselves in and believed we could do it against any side. Nothing should change this year in that respect either.
Q5. What about life after Asian Football? Where are you playing? I also heard a whisper that you have run into a Singapore Wombat, a Bali Gecko and a Malaysian Warrior recently. Also, your thoughts on the new AFL Asia?
I have been having a kick down at my old club, the mighty Monash Blues in the ammos. I haven’t been able to train as much as I would like but it has been great getting involved with the best club in Australia but second best club in the world. And yes there are some other internationals in the Monash squad including an ex Singapore Wombat, ex Malaysian Warrior, ex Toronto Blue and ex Swannie in Lurch aka Marty Beecroft and Lurch’s brother, Pinky. It was at the supermarket that I bumped into the Bali Gecko.
Q6. On Asian Championships day this weekend, you will be heading to the ‘G’ with a few Swannies for the Tigers (YELLOW and BLACK) v Bluebaggers, and I hope this day becomes an annual event for the returned Swannies. Who will you relying on for up to date info and comments on the Asian Championships and why?
I am actually unable to attend as I am playing for Monash so i guess it will have to be the Silver Fox’s bush telegraph (Fabbo’s Swannies website) that I will have to tap into to keep up to date.
Q7. Finally, one player name answers to these comments…
- Best kick – Tra Vy
- Best Mark – Revo or SOS
- Best touring room mate – Shinboner of the Century, Nat Payne
- Worst touring room mate – Shinboner of the Century, Nat Payne
Dukesy now finishes off the interview with Flyer to complete the bookends… Cheers, Flyer. Hope to catch you soon. Dukesy.
Coming up on the Swannies website…
Billy previews the Asian Champs in Part II of his two part series. And Billy, as teh new Captain from Saigon also catches up with the Flyer.
