Footy matches will be played across South East Asia on ANZAC weekend.

The East Asian Australian Football League’s (EAAFL) website has reported on the footy matches being played across South East Asia next ANZAC weekend – some of which will be official EAAFL matches. The article is reproduced below.

ANZAC Weekend, 27 April 2013, is fast approaching and there will be two EAAFL blockbusters:

  • Singapore Wombats Vs Malaysia Warriors, Singapore (this will be part of a Tri Nations Cup which will see a round robin played between Singapore, Malaysia and the Cambodian Eagles to celebrate the Wombats’ 20th Anniversary).
  • Vietnam Swans Vs Jakarta Bintangs, Vung Tau, Vietnam. (this match will be played on the former Lord Mayor’s Oval. This is the same oval that was used by the diggers who played in a Vietnam Football League (VFL) competition that ran from 1966-1971.

Excitingly, the Bintangs and the Wombats will be making their EAAFL debuts.

Other ANZAC matches to be played on 27 April will be:

  • A Thailand Tigers domestic match in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, near the infamous Bridge on the River Kwai. This will be the Tigers’ 10th ANZAC Match.
  • The Borneo Bears will host a match against the Jakarta Garudas in Balikpapan, Borneo. Both teams are made up entirely of national players. In addition, there shall be a sportsmen’s night featuring Gary Buckenara, Robert Dipierdomenico and John Connolly.

And today, over in Japan, the Osaka Dingoes and Nagoya Redbacks will be playing an ANZAC match in Toyota City.
