Football clubs and communities

Yesterday, the official death toll from Victoria’s devastating bushfires climbed to 200. It is expected the final toll will be closer to 300. In addition, 1,800 homes were destroyed and up to 7,000 people are now homeless.

Local sporting clubs are often the heart and soul of communities. The devastated communities in Victoria were no different. Sport brings people together and provides an outlet. The sporting clubs will play a key role in the rebuilding of these communities.

Yesterday, the Bali Geckos Aussie Rules Club emailed the community of Asian footy clubs about the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football
League
(YVMDFL) which covers townships such as Kinglake and Marysville.

The “YVMDFL is collecting donations from the sporting community which will be directed to specific projects that can support the sporting communities of all affected areas.” If you would like to make a donation, visit the YVMDFL website or make a deposit at the Bendigo Bank, “YVMDFL Bush Fire Fund”, BSB: 633 000, A/c No. 132265287

The Bali Geckos have a strong relationship with their local community. Following the 2002 Bali Bombings, they established a strong connection with the local foundation,Yayasan Sri Kandhi, which assists widows from the tragedy.

On a side note, Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has written to Prime Minister Rudd committing  “$1 million towards reconstruction in Victoria, as well as sending a forensic team to help identify bushfire victims”.

Meanwhile, tonight in Saigon, the Australian Chamber of Commerce will hold an Australian Bushfire Fundraising Event at Jaspas, 33 Dong Khoi Street, District 1 from 6 – 8pm. All are welcome.

The Vietnam Swans will play the Bali Geckos in Saigon on 28 March 2009.
