Footy in Saigon is back in 2024! The 1st round of SAFL is on this Saturday. A stacked calendar of international games last year meant that the SAFL had to be put on the back burner in 2023 as we didn’t get to complete a full season of it. Not complaining, as we want to play as much footy as we can and there will be plenty of it to be played locally and internationally this year.

We’ll be calling RMIT University in District 7 home again this season and we’re grateful for that as it’s a beautiful deck. To begin the footy season at RMIT we’ve got the usual four teams: The dominant Ben Thanh Bears, Thu Thiem Tigers, Vung Tau Vipers and the Cho Lon Crocs all vying for that top spot and claiming to be the best team in Saigon. The teams this year are evenly matched in all areas of the ground (according to Wayno). Time will tell.

BURNING QUESTIONS

Has Cam King fixed his kicking woes?

The man’s thirst for bags were all on show last year as he started the season dobbing them from everywhere and kicking plenty! Then the yips came in and he blamed his boots for it. He’s bought a very loud pair of boots in the off season and he believes he won’t have a problem kicking them through the eye diddle diddle this year. We’ll see. The Tigers will need him firing if they’re a chance.

Will Wayno have an injury free season?

This one is easy. No, he won’t. The bloke is already sidelined to start the season with an ankle injury. The oldest 28 year old on the list had an unlucky run in 2023 often using his head to tackle blokes. Done plenty of maneuvering off the field with the Bears list. They surely can’t win it like that. Surely not.

How will the major loss of Rusty affect the Crocs?

During the offseason, one of the unfunniest men but absolute gun footballer in Rusty departed the club. Leaves not only a huge hole in the national team but also as captain of the Crocs. Enter the spiritual leader Jakey Norris taking over the captaincy. Don’t write the Crocs off yet.

Will the ultra competitive Brodes learn to share?

Learn to share as in not on the football field as she’s one of the most selfless players and we’ll do anything she can to help her team win, no matter what. This is about learning to share captaincy duties with Will ‘Enter’ Sandman. Brodes is a self-driven alpha and it’s probably a good idea if Will stays out of her way. Everyone needs to, otherwise, they will get crunched! Vipers are looking like a dangerous outfit with these two leading them out.
