The Southern Dragons, who played here in Saigon on 9 January 2012, are back this weekend to take on the Swannies.

Swannies Co Captain, Billy Crang previews the mega blockbuster this weekend between the Southern Dragons and the Swannies – Reds & Whites Gangnam style.

The Vietnam Swans Reds Vs

the Vietnam Swans White Vs

The Southern Dragons

12th October – 2.30pm kick-off – 117 Hồng Hà, Quận Tân Bình – Hồ Chí Minh

The Southern Dragons and the Vietnam Swans, as sister clubs, form a remarkable mirror image of each other. A footy club in Melbourne, the AFL’s heartland comprised mostly of players of Asian descent and a footy club in Vietnam, far from AFL’s heartland (but AFL Asia’s heartland!!) comprised mostly of players of non-Asian descent.  The contradiction actually forms the bond and both clubs have found unique synergies in our experiences: love for footy, connections to Australia and Asia, but mostly our love for footy.

For the second time, the Dragons will tour Vietnam and for the second time the residents of HCMC will be hooting their horns for this block buster.  This year we won’t be at the Vietnamese home of footy the Saigon RMIT’s cam[pus but in District 2 at the fantastic Estella development by the Hanoi Highway.

It doesn’t matter: footy will be the winner on the day and the teams will strengthen our bond ever further.

The Format (subject to change!):

Given the field size, we’ll play a three way round robin for ultimate glory.

The Dragons Best Vs the 2 best Swannies teams head to head in three lightning-paced games.

Besides the bragging rights, the winning team will win three boxes of Tiger beer to share with the other teams and the Heart of the Dragons/Swans/Swans will also be recognized and rewarded for their brilliance/effort/courage or other unique performances on the big day.

Schedule – 1pm @ Spotted Cow and taxi convoy to the field / start of Auskick at the field

  • 1:30pm – Warm up for all players.
  • 2:00 – Dragons v Swans Reds – 2 x 12 min halves + 5 minutes for ½ time
  • 2:40 – Swans White v Swans Reds – 2 x 12 min halves + 5 minutes for ½time
  • 3:20 – Dragons v Swans Whites – 2 x 12 min halves + 5 minutes for ½ time
  • 4pm – Couple of frothies and reflection the brilliance that was just on display
  • 4.30ish – Taxi convoy back to central D1

6pm – Reassemble at the night time home of the Swannies, the Spotted Cow downstairs for drink and food specials, awards and a few yarns before we head out.

Directions

Estella is easy to find, after crossing the Saigon bridge it’s on the highway about 1km down the road.  Estella is around 50metres past the big Metro supermarket on the right.  We’re playing on the field on the Right hand side.

HONK!
