One of the great things about the Swannies having such a high turnover rate… ahem, doesn’t quite sound right… is that Swannies pop up everywhere to fly the Swannies flag. And that was certainly the case on Grand Final Day.
In the photo above, far left, we have the former Saigon Prez, Dez Limbrick and Fleur dressed in their finery in Frankston Melbourne.
Next pic along, we have Timmay Clements and Asha Phillips in Taipei.
Then there is Carlton footballer Michael Jamison sporting a Swannies’ top and hat at the MCG (with a switched on friend who barracks for the Hawks). He had only flown out of Saigon the night before and was straight to the ‘G wearing his finest Swannies’ wardrobe! During the day, Michael was sending text messages to the Swannies in Vietnam saying he wanted to bid at our auctions. However,we politely declined his offer as we were too nervous to ask him which club’s footy jumper he was chasing.
Then, there was Rick Trewavas with his son Angus and granddaughter, Katie in Melbourne. Angus is wearing the Rick Trewavas Medal. Formerly, the Rick Trewavas Medal was awarded to the Swannies’ best and most courageous player against Cambodia. This year, we have appropriately elevated the Medal’s status to Clubman of the Year. It will be awarded each year in both Hanoi and Saigon. For the record, Rick, a passionate supporter of anything with red and white declared after Sydney’s premiership win that “Delirium is such a wonderful state of mind!”
Other Swannies sporting their colours on Grand Final Day included Matty Smashalotto in Manila; Mark Pleiter and Sammy Stevens in Cebu, Philippines; and Josh Little who had his Swannies’ jumper hanging over the boundary fence at the MCG 45 minutes before the first seagull arrived.
Danny Armstrong was reportedly wearing his Swannies shirt at the Shanghai Tigers function – but no photo. Sammy Conroy was holed up in a hotel room in Atlanta, USA and who else was where else, we’re not sure.
So, if you have a photo from Grand Final Day where you are wearing something with a Vietnam Swans flavour, email it to the Vietnam Swans before Friday 5 October for your chance to win a Swannies’ polo shirt as we look under any rock and sparing no effort to find the Swannie of September.
Click onto our Swannies in September photo album to see what Swannies have been doing, not just on Grand Final Day but throughout the entire month of September (as determined by the date that the Swannies have received the photos – with the exception of Grand Final Day photos which may be submitted until Friday, 5 September).
