Ahhh… The infamous “Cannonball Run”…

If you are not familiar with it, the Cannonball Run is perhaps the most enjoyable (and affordable) tour on The Vietnam Swans annual footy calendar! The Cambodia Eagles and Apsaras are our long time cross-town rivals, once bitter rivals to be very honest (going back over a decade) but a rivalry that has now evolved into a highly respectful one, albeit fierce, across both Men’s and Women’s ranks.

What you need to know:

Game day – August 5th 12noon-4pm

Social – Friday night footy / Welcome dinner The Vine, Saturday after game function at AussieXL

Transportation by bus from District 1 (HCMC) Friday 4:30pm, leaving at 1pm Sunday from Phnom Penh

In past years this notorious tour has produced some extraordinary results (good and bad) and been the catalyst of some extraordinary stories! This tour has broken the strongest of Men and Women, it has created legends, and it has produced some of the great Swannies moments – Some of which will be forever locked in the vault and some that have now become well-known Swans folklore. Be sure to ask about these on the buses there and back or at some stage over the weekend. In true football club spirit these stories may vary from person to person, but every version will be worth having asked the question!

In 2023, this will be our first tour coming off a long break and the results may not be as clear-cut as expected. How have we managed ourselves during the Summer Break? Are we going to hit the ground running or are we in danger of getting jumped after a boozy bus trip over on the Friday night?

The Apsaras upset our ladies on our home deck in 2022, and it’s a loss that I know Wayne and his new-look group of stars will be eager to get back on this upcoming trip. The Lady Swans have been on a tear this year, off the back of some great coaching and fast learning, and are set to have a real crack at Asian Champs silverware in September, with every match in-between being of the utmost importance! The group is primed and ready to go from all reports, and we’re all looking forward to watching them perform again on the big stage next month in Phnom Penh.

The Men are coming off a poor performance up in Hanoi against the region’s best and are eager again to taste success, along with using the upcoming trip as another opportunity to really connect and bond as a national group in the lead-up to Asian Champs, both on field and on Saturday night in the boat race, fines session and all other events that will inevitably form as the night progresses! Let’s get back on the horse after a much-needed break and enjoy the rest of the year for what it is – Good times with good mates, and playing the sport we love on an international level! Improvement is needed, but let’s enjoy the grind and reap the rewards in style.

This tour really is one not to be missed. Two big games away from home in hostile territory, let’s get two strong squads over there, sweep the home side, create more memories and get back on the track in prep for a stacked second half of the season.
