Yesterday, as the Swannies subjected ourselves to ANZAC Boot Camps in Hanoi and Vung Tau, the sun set on the life of television journalist, Peter Harvey, who was aged just 68.
A significant chapter of Peter’s career was spent covering the Vietnam War.
In 2011, Peter returned to Vietnam to cover the ANZAC Dawn Service at Long Tan for Channel 9 News with producer, Mike Dalton. Two days earlier, he had reported on the Vietnam Swans’ 2nd Annual ANZAC Friendship Match against the Hong Kong Dragons (see video clip of news story below).
Peter’s coverage was genuine and respected the intent of the ANZAC Friendship Match. The tone of his report was particularly important given the political sensitivities around the Match which was still very much in its infancy.
While the Vietnam Swans do not claim to have a special relationship with Peter beyond him reporting on one of our events, we would like to recognise and thank him for his contribution at such an important time.
Accordingly, as a mark of respect to the man, the Vietnam Swans will wear black armbands in memory of Peter at our next international match. That match will be played against the Malaysian Warriors in Kuala Lumpur on 30 March, 2013.
Separately, the Club will contact Mike Dalton to convey our condolences and deepest sympathies.
[UPDATE 6 March 2013: Mike has written that Peter’s daughter, Claire, has said that “he (Peter Harvey) would be chuffed at the thought of the (Vietnam Swans) wearing black armbands for him”.]
RIP Peter Harvey (1944-2013).
